I love this essay. I grew up in north Alabama in a teetotaling family, but I remember when my parents would have friends over to play cards and, fueled by finger foods and a percolator full of coffee. they would chatter and laugh deep into the night. It’s the optimism I miss most; even the political protests of the ’60s were filled with an attainable hope.
